Welcome — Black Hills Youth Football and Cheer (BHYFL) — Youth Tackle Football

Welcome to Black Hills Youth Football and Cheer League (BHYFL) — Youth Tackle Football! Whether you’re new to the league or returning for another season, we’re excited to have your family join our football program. New Season. New Team. One Dream.

Youth tackle football is more than just learning plays — it’s about building character, confidence, and teamwork. Athletes learn accountability, leadership, discipline, and the importance of positive sportsmanship. Every position has a purpose, and players quickly learn how working together toward a common goal leads to success both on and off the field.

Youth Tackle Football is open to athletes within the BHYFL age and grade guidelines.

Player Development & Expectations

Throughout the season, football players will learn the fundamentals of the game, including proper techniques, play execution, teamwork, and respect for the sport. Athletes are expected to come to practices and games ready to learn, work hard, and support their teammates. Consistent attendance and effort play a key role in each player’s development and overall experience.

Most importantly, football players need to know that they are valued. Athletes are taught to win with grace, lose with dignity, and understand that effort and growth matter just as much as the final score. Players are expected to show up to practices and games ready to learn, work hard, and give their best effort every time they step on the field. As the saying goes, “Some wish for it — champions work for it.” Win or lose, when an athlete gives everything they have and leaves it all on the field, that effort is worth celebrating.

Football players are required to attend practices on the designated days and times set by their association. Consistent participation helps athletes build skills, confidence, and strong team connections throughout the season.

Season Structure: Games, Playoffs & Championships

Football teams will practice on designated days and times set by their individual associations. Games are typically held on Saturdays at locations throughout the Black Hills, with schedules released closer to the start of the season.

The season concludes with playoffs, leading to the BHYFL Football Championships, where teams compete for league titles and celebrate the hard work they’ve put in all season.

Coaches & Safety

Safety is a top priority at BHYFL. All football coaches are USA Football Heads Up Certified, receiving training that focuses on proper tackling techniques, player safety, conditioning, and concussion awareness. In addition, the league conducts federal, state, and local background checks on all coaches to ensure a safe and supportive environment for our athletes.

Fees & Additional Requirements

Registration fees cover league participation; however, families may be responsible for additional association-specific costs. These may include, but are not limited to, volunteer deposits or fundraising requirements. Associations will communicate specific details and deadlines directly with families.

Medical & Registration Requirements

All football players must have a current sports physical on file before participating in practices. Physicals must meet league guidelines and be submitted during team certification, which takes place toward the end of summer before the season begins. Associations will also collect:

  • A copy of the athlete’s birth certificate

  • A recent photo

  • The athlete’s most recent report card

We look forward to an exciting football season filled with growth, teamwork, and unforgettable moments. Thank you for being part of Black Hills Youth Football and Cheer — where athletes learn, compete, and grow together.
